Next week, September 2 to 9, is Zero Waste Week and Hayley Lambert of the Packaging Not Included shop in Hughenden Yard has plenty of ideas of how we can join in with this initiative.
“There isn’t just a huge problem with plastic pollution, there’s a Climate Emergency. We are using earth’s resources faster than they can be replenished and we’re heading for disaster.
Zero waste is of course about reducing plastic usage, but it is also about minimising our impact on the planet more generally. The more we reduce our waste and consumption, the greater the positive impact will be on the environment.
As the shop is practically all organic anyway it ties in really well with Zero Waste Week.”
Hayley suggests swapping to natural body care products such as the deodorants, shampoo and conditioner bars, soaps, bamboo toothbrushes, reusable facial pads, shaving bars now on sale in the shop.
“Zero Waste Week is also an opportunity to: get composting, avoid buying any new stuff (including clothes), swap to a green energy supplier like Ecotricity, only use the car if you really need to and research the ethics of the companies you buy from by visiting www.ethicalconsumer.org.”
Hayley suggests buying things that are unwrapped or in compostable packaging. Packaging Not Included has been open for six months now and customers using the shop have saved over 15,000 pieces of plastic packaging
Hayley says, “Your purchases have not only saved a huge amount of packaging, but by choosing zero waste shopping you are supporting small, independent family businesses. You’re supporting companies with a commitment to reducing our impact on the planet.”
On Tuesday September 24 from 6 pm to 8.45pm at Café Movida in Hughenden Yard, Hayley is organising a clothes swap. Participants are requested to bring along six to twelve items of clothing, shoes and accessories. They will receive tokens for these items and can have a drink and talk about zero waste fashion while the clothes are sorted and organised. It will then be possible to shop with the tokens.
Packaging Not Included is open every day except Monday, hours vary.
