Official: Crown Estate wants to build 220 houses and hotel at Salisbury Road

It’s official: Crown Estate wants to build 220 houses and hotel on land off at Salisbury Road, on the outskirts of Marlborough.

A planning application was submitted on Monday following a consultation exercise last year with residents.

The plans include the allocation of 88 homes deemed ‘affordable’ – exactly 40 per cent of the development.

The proposals also include a new hotel, and a drop-off area for St John’s Academy to reduce congestion on existing streets.

Financial contributions to support local health and education infrastructure, ecological and landscaping measures to protect views and wildlife, and a range of measures to mitigate potential traffic impacts have also been offered.

A toucan crossing will be built on the northern arm of the Salisbury Road roundabout, providing a safe crossing point between the site and Tesco/Marlborough Business Park, and improvements to the cycle and pedestrian link between through to St John’s Academy and the town centre will be made.

The Crown Estate’s strategic land manager, Steve Melligan, said: “We listened carefully to the views of local people and have refined and improved our proposals.

“Our submitted scheme reflects the public’s preference for a scheme with more housing and a new hotel.

“In doing so it will help meet Marlborough’s future housing needs and make a positive contribution to town’s future growth and prosperity.”

He added that following consultation in autumn 2014 on two sets of proposals – a 180 home scheme, including affordable housing and a 220 home scheme with a hotel and a larger amount of affordable housing – feedback revealed support for the second option.

The site – opposite Marlborough Business Park – was allocated for 220 homes in Wiltshire Council’s Core Strategy. Crown Estates first revealed their plans for the site back in 2008.
