A public consultation is to start on plans to re-develop Old Yard, off the south side of London Road, with luxury retirement apartments. No planning consent has yet been sought and a public exhibition of the outline plans will held at the Bowls Club on Thursday, 19 February.
The prime Old Yard site – once home to Marlborough Building Supplies and a number of small enterprises – has been bought by the developers Renaissance Retirement. They specialise in homes for retired people. The company was founded in 1997 and their first development was within the Prince of Wales’ Poundbury development on the edge of Dorchester.
The plans for this development include one and two bedroom apartments – with a communal lounge and ‘guest suite’ for visiting friends and relatives. If planning permission is granted, it is expected building would start later this year, with a show home on view in 2016.
Renaissance Retirement’s development director, Nick Watkins, comments: “Judging by the large number of enquiries for our site as well as research conducted, there is considerable interest in Marlborough for independent retirement living.”
“Research estimates over £400 billion of housing wealth is tied up in properties where owners desperately wish to scale down. Renaissance’s proposed retirement development in Marlborough offers an ideal opportunity for those people approaching their later years who aspire to downsize.”
Renaissance Retirement design, build and manage retirement developments “with communal areas meticulously cleaned and maintained to ensure a level of comfort that one would expect in a 4 star hotel.”
The consultation will allow people to comment on the outline plans. The exhibit at the Bowls Club, Salisbury Road on Thursday, February 19 will be open from 4.00pm to 7.00pm.
