Aspiga, an ethical women’s fashion store, opened a few weeks ago at 119A High Street, (opposite Waitrose). This is Aspiga’s fifth store and builds on the success of its Cornish, Wilton and London stores.
Founded by, ex-charity worker, Lucy Macnamara in 2006, Aspiga was set up with the intention of supporting talented artisans in Kenya and helping stimulate business through trade. Aspiga was an award-winning brand and finalist in the Drapers Sustainability Fashion Awards 2021, Brand of the Year.
“It all began in 2003 when I was on holiday in South Africa and was awestruck by the artistry of the delicate, hand-beaded sandals from Kenya, and the intricately adorned belts and beautiful bright jewellery. So, the next year I fixed a trip to Kenya and was astounded by the handwork of all the creative artisans, and decided it needed to be shared with the world,” commented Lucy Macnamara.
Over the next few years, the Aspiga collection increased to offer a complete holiday wardrobe, made by local suppliers in Kenya and India, with its ongoing commitment of fighting poverty through trade. In 2012 the online business launched.
Lucy’s commitment to sustainable and ethical fashion practices remains at the heart of Aspiga. From the production processes to the materials, fabrics, and packaging, Aspiga chooses carefully with a commitment to reducing and offsetting their carbon footprint. Materials are sourced from natural, organic, renewable, and recycled sources wherever possible.
“By teaming up with locals from marginalised communities, we help stimulate their economies and empower them so they can sustain their livelihoods and thrive. We make sure our suppliers meet ethical business standards, knowing that everyone in the Aspiga family has fair wages, safe working conditions and respect.
In 2021 we donated to and worked with WaterHarvest in India, the Elimu Sewing Project, restart Africa, Bluebells School in Kenya, India Covid Appeal, NHS Charities Together and Crisis in the UK.”
Over the years Aspiga has garnered many celebrity fans and eco-warrior supporters including Liz Earle, Olivia Firth and Julia Bradbury.
This season, Aspiga launches its biggest autumn collection to date. Key highlights include a new corduroy collection including tailored trouser suits and statement dresses, a colourful collection of Fair Isle knits, organic denim, chunky boots, versatile day-dresses and organic cotton blouses.
