Many local schools finished the term with a nativity play involving some of their youngest pupils. At Marlborough St Mary’s Year 2 children performed a traditional retelling of the Christmas Story with special song performances from both Year 1 classes. At Preshute Primary School Years 1 and 2 performed ‘The Christmas Recipe’ which had all the traditional ingredients of a nativity play and more. The older pupils presented the nativity through an evening TV news report in Marlborough College Chapel. However, the prize for the most authentic setting must go to Kennet Valley School who performed in a barn at Tan Hill Farm, West Kennet.
Jacqy McQue, teacher at Kennet Valley School, said, “This year the Wrens and Kingfishers classes from Kennet Valley School in Lockeridge went one step further to capture the spirit of the first Christmas, when they performed their Nativity ‘The Angel Who Was Always Late’ in a real barn, in West Kennet. It was a bit chillier than it would have been in Bethlehem but the children dressed up with multiple layers under their costumes and warmed themselves up by acting and singing their hearts out, to a fabulous reception from the audience!
One parent told us how amazing it was for the children, to drive up the track to the barn, dressed up and ready to perform and seeing the twinkly Christmas lights in the distance. Another parent commented that when they were seated to watch the play on hay bales in the barn it really felt like they had been transported back to that first Christmas.
The children were so excited. It was really special to see and hear the barn come to life with the sound of angels and other characters from the Christmas story, acting, singing and dancing. The children all worked so hard and they loved the opportunity to perform in such a fantastic setting; thank you so much to Farmer Mark for the loan of your lovely barn.”
Teacher, Sarah Hues, said, “It was so lovely to be able to perform our nativity to parents, family and friends this year as the previous two years we have filmed our performances due to Covid.”
“The barn was the perfect setting and despite the cold the children performed brilliantly!” added Teacher, Lisa Morgan.
Claire Hann–Perkins, Headteacher at Preshute Promary School, told Marlborough.news, “At Preshute Primary School, our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes worked together to put on a brilliant performance of The Christmas Recipe. The fantastic cooks (along with the help of their trusty cats and dogs) cooked up a brilliant recipe for Christmas including Father Christmas, elves, presents, angels, snowflakes, robins, shepherds, sheep, stars, wise men, a donkey, Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus.
Key Stage 2 pupils (Years 3-6) worked hard to create a fantastic performance in Marlborough College Chapel. They told the story of the Nativity but with a twist through an evening TV news report. Preshute loved this modern take on the Nativity story, filled with beautiful songs and great humour. From angels to shepherds and, finally, to kings, each class sang their class song with confidence. Children sang, danced and played their musical instruments. It was an afternoon to remember. Well done to all of KS2 for your hard work and dedication.”
