Mike Tupman MBE, Marlborough’s Town Crier for the past eight years and before that the ‘face of policing’ as the town’s Special Constable for years before died on Saturday last week – 13 January. Town Clerk, Richard Spencer-Williams issued the following note:
Mike Tupman, MBE
It is with deep sadness that we are letting you know that our Town Crier, Mike Tupman MBE, died
on Saturday 13 January.
Mike took up the Town Crier role on 7 March 2016 when Alfie Johnson stepped down and passed
the bell to Mike. Later that year, in August, Mike won a Town Crier competition – having only
attended with the intention of picking up tips about the role.
Mike brought dignity, humour and kindness to every event, and we know he will be sadly missed
by the wider community as well as all at Marlborough Town Council.
Before taking on the Town Crier role, Mike was a well-known and much loved Special Constable
in the town after a long career in business at Cadbury. In 2013 he was awarded an MBE for
services to Policing and the Marlborough community.
Mike’s daughters, Carole and Helen, have asked us to share the details of his funeral which will
take place at All Saints’ Church, Burbage on Monday, 5 February at 11am. The service will be
followed by a cremation at North Wilts Crematorium, Royal Wootton Bassett and then a wake at
Marlborough Golf Club.
“The town has lost one of its great characters” said Marlborough Mayor, Nicholas Fogg. “As a
long-serving Special Constable he was always available, always fair, always firm. As Town Crier he had the most resonant voice I recall ever hearing, bringing his sense of humour to every occasion.
We will miss him deeply”.
Mike – or “Tuppers” as we knew him – touched so many people, he will be very sadly missed.
Richard Spencer Williams, PSLCC
