Today, May 5, in his first mayoral duty, Marlborough’s new Mayor, Cllr Nick Fogg, who was accompanied by Mayoress, Edwina Fogg presented Coronation mugs to pupils from Marlborough St Mary’s at The Parade Cinema. The special Coronation mugs bear the borough’s coat of arms and the Coronation emblem. To mark the Coronation, Marlborough Town Council have provided a Coronation mug for each pupil at Preshute Primary School and Marlborough St Mary’s.
Mayor Nick Fogg said, “You can’t have a Coronation without giving kids mugs – this is really worthwhile.” And he told the pupils, “Whatever happens don’t drop the mug on the way back to school. Keep it safe and you will be able to show it to your children’s children.” Mayor Nick also brought along his collection of mugs from previous Coronations to show the children.

This isn’t the first time that Marlborough’s Mayor has handed out Coronation mugs to the school children of the town. Then Mayor, EJ Free presented mugs of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation many years ago in 1953.
Year 5 pupils, Emily and Zara (aged 10) told Marlborough.news, “The mugs are really cool and detailed. I’ll be able to keep it for ever and be able to show my grandchildren and say ‘I was there.’ The Coronation is a big moment in history it’s great that we’re here.”

Back at school the pupils have been busy making crowns, many of which will be worn in the Crowns and Capes parade at Sunday’s street party. They have also been making and decorating eco Coronation medallions. Both the crowns and the medallions have been made using recycled materials. Marlborough St Mary’s is also celebrating the Coronation by holding a special Coronation lunch today. Excitement is mounting!
