Marlborough St Mary’s has achieved the School Games Gold Mark, a 2012 government led awards scheme for schools who demonstrate commitment to the development of sporting competition in their school and the community. Pupils have achieved considerable success at county level. In the Wiltshire and Swindon School Games, held on July 5, Years 4/5 pupils were crowned county champions in Tri Golf and Years 5/6 pupils came a close second in Quad Kids. At the county cricket finals, held in Trowbridge on July 8, the Year 5/6 girls won the championship title.
Kirsty Miles, PE teacher said, “After a fantastic year of sport at Marlborough St Mary’s, we made it through to the Wiltshire and Swindon School Games to compete at the Tri Golf and Quad Kids (athletics) events. With a fun packed morning the Years 4/5 golf team took part in a number of different putting and pitching activities to score points. Marlborough St Mary’s were crowned County Champions, winning by over 200 points!
In the afternoon, it was the turn of the Years 5/6 Quad Kids team. Each child took part in a 70m sprint, long distance run, vortex throw and a long jump. Each score was then turned into points and with a massive score of 1648 Marlborough St Mary’s finished second, narrowly missing out on top spot.
Finally, to top off week, the Years 5/6 girls’ cricket team headed off to sunny Trowbridge to compete in the County Cricket Finals. After winning all the morning group games, we played the runners up of the other pool in the semi-finals. Some fantastic teamwork was shown by all the girls and they went through to the final to play Peatmoor Primary School who they had previously played in the morning, narrowly beating them by 7 runs. The girls knew they were in for a tough game. The final was fantastic to watch and, with some great bowling and amazing batting from all the girls, we were crowned County Champions.
I am so proud of each and every child who has represented Marlborough St Mary’s, showing great attitude, passion and teamwork throughout the year. To be crowned County Champions for Tri Golf, 2nd for Quad Kids at the Wiltshire and Swindon School Games and then to become County champions at the Girls’ Cricket is fantastic.”
PE Lead teacher, Rachel Haines, said, “It has been amazing to see our children thrive in many different sporting events this year. We have been working hard at Marlborough St. Mary’s to ensure that all children have the opportunity to take part in and enjoy sport and I’m sure our success will help inspire even more success in the future.”
Headteacher, Dan Crossman, added, “I’m very proud of all the sporting accolades we have achieved this year. Sport has played a huge part in my life and it’s brilliant we are able to give our children all of these opportunities. I’m really pleased that our school is fast becoming the sporting hub of Wiltshire!”
