
People playing the game film themselves consuming large quantities of alcohol before carrying out a dare. They then nominate a friend – using the hashtag #neknominate – to perform their own booze-fuelled stunt.
Five days ago a woman was filmed riding a horse into a County Durham branch of Tesco before downing a can of Pepsi and nominating others to carry on the dare.
Four deaths in the UK and Ireland have been linked to NekNomination. On Sunday south London hostel worker Isaac Richardson died after downing a lethal combination of wine, whisky, vodka and lager.
Sergeant Barry Reed said: “From what I have been informed this is a craze that local people are engaging in and we would like to remind everyone of the risks involved.
“This is a craze dominated by peer pressure, but everyone must make their own choices.”
