Marlborough Penguins Swimming Club has been celebrating this week after it was confirmed that three members of their Performance Squad have qualified for the British, English and Welsh Summer Championships this year. This is fast on the heels of the success of Peter Seward, from the Marlborough Penguins Masters Squad, who swam at the British Masters Long Course Championships in April.
The National Championships are the most elite domestic competitions, with those qualifying for British Championships being within the top 28 fastest swimmers in their age range across Great Britain. And those qualifying for the Home Nation Championships (English, Welsh, Scottish) being in the next 40 fastest swimmers in their respective countries of representation.
Florence Barkholt (14 years) has qualified in the 100m Freestyle in the British Championships. Giacomo Fatica (17 years) has qualified in the 50m & 100m Freestyle, 100m Back, 100m Butterfly, 200m IM and 100m breaststroke for both the Junior Para Championships and the English Summer Championships. Logan Lovell (12 years) has qualified for the 50m, 100m & 200m Breaststroke in the Welsh Summer Championships
Head Coach, Dom Keogh said; “Congratulations to Flo, Logan and Giacomo. They have worked hard since their successes at the Wiltshire County and South West Regional Championships to secure their places in the National Championships. We are very proud of what they have achieved and look forward to supporting them this summer!”
In April this year, Peter Seward, a member of the Marlborough Penguins Masters Squad, qualified for the 50, 100, 200 & 400m Freestyle at the British Masters Long Course Championships in Swansea (his old home town). Peter went on to win a very impressive 3 silver medals and 1 bronze medal in the 65-69 year category. Peter has been a member of Marlborough Penguins for over 25 years and is a great role model for many of our squad swimmers, contributing to the Club through swimming and volunteering over many years.
As well as looking forwards to cheering our national qualifiers on this summer, the Club is now preparing for its Club Championships at the end of June at Marlborough College; a weekend packed full of races and fun, before a well-deserved summer break in August to allow swimmers, coaches and teachers to recharge their batteries.
