At 8am on this Saturday morning – 21 May – a group of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and adult volunteers will be setting out to do ParkRun on The Common to raise money for some essential building refurbishment work that needs to be done to their Scout Hut on the corner of George Lane and Pewsey Road.
The Hut may be called the Scout Hut but it’s also a valuable and much used space by many other community groups, so the Scouts will be doing what Scouts have been doing for many, many years – helping the community.
The building – or the original Scout Hut has been there for at least a century. The current building went up in 1974, nearly half a century ago and needs work to make it more efficient and sustainable.
The funds raised will get the building surveyed and assessed for what’s possible, at what cost, with the aim to continue to provide a cost effective local community space for all age groups. And not least to meet the purpose of Scouting – to continue to actively engage and support young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society.
Marlborough Mayor Lisa Farrell will be there on The Common, at that early hour on Saturday to wave the runners off, and to give support to on of the town’s important youth organisations.
To give the Scouts and the rest of the runners a bit of a boost, click here to donate via their ‘Just Giving’ page.
Last but not least, 2nd Marlborough Scout Group are always looking for more volunteers. All volunteers receive training and there is a variety of courses on offer ranging from first aid to management training. Young leaders aged 14-18 are also encouraged to apply, to find out how, click here.
