The new Bishop of Ramsbury has been named as 59-year-old Canon Edward Condry, who will move to Wiltshire from his post at Canterbury Cathedral, where he has been in charge of teaching and education.
He was very much front runner for the promotion, but not because he is in fact a sporting man having taken part in 10 marathons as well as other sports.
His new task will be to work with the Bishop of Salisbury, Nicholas Holtam, to look after the ministry in the diocese, working with the clergy, congregations and communities.
He will also be involved with promoting fair trade, energy issues and supporting the arts.
“I am delighted by my appointment and look forward to moving to this beautiful part of the country,” says Canon Condry. “Cathedral life has been wonderful but I’m excited about going back to working with the community including schools and local churches.”
Canon Condry and his wife Sarah have four adult children.
His sporting background, apart from running marathons, has also included competing in the British Indoor Rowing Championships before representing Team GB in the 2006 World Championships held in Boston.
And this summer he is cycling 1,500 miles from Olympia in Greece to the Olympic Stadium in London in two weeks to raise money for the air ambulance.
A date for his consecration as Bishop has yet to be announced.
