It is 10.55am on a Sunday morning in July and all the parking places in Marlborough High Street are full – except for one. And no one could park there because it is full… full of rubbish from the previous day’s market – including a scattering of overripe tomatoes.
A little further on someone had taken the initiative and pushed an accumulation of cardboard boxes and other less seemly rubbish out of another parking place and into the south side of the High Street.
Among the parked cars there were two with licence plates indicating they had brought tourists to the town.
At 10.57 a Wiltshire Council rubbish cart was seen beginning to clear up the rubbish.
A rather indignant passer-by asked whether the market traders paid Wiltshire Council for their pitches so that Wiltshire Council would clear away their rubbish – as soon as the market closed.
What a welcome to Marlborough!
