Tory MP Claire Perry is bemoaning the fact that she won’t be waving a flag in Marborough next week when the Olympic torchbearers run through the decorated High Street en route to the Olympic stadium in London.
In fact, she complains that she will be locked away on vital votes in the House of Commons, which she describes as “a very posh penal colony,” along with other MPs through whose constituencies the torch is being carried.
“I hope the rain holds off at least for a few days so that there is a huge turnout to cheer on the Olympic torchbearers in Marlborough next week,” Mrs Perry tells constituents in her weekly newspaper column.
“I was touched to learn that the torch is also being carried through the village of Nailsea where I grew up, on the same day that it comes to Marlborough.”
“I am deeply sorry that I am not able to be in either place as there is a strict three-line whip this week, meaning all MPs must be present every day for votes and therefore cannot leave under almost any circumstances.”
And she adds: “Sometimes, being in the House of Commons does feel a bit like being back at Nailsea Comprehensive or perhaps even being incarcerated in a very posh penal colony.”
“However, I am being released in time to do a sponsored walk in West Woods, Lockeridge, this Saturday with my local Conservative association.”
“If you are out and about in the same area, do please look for me with Zinzan the wonder dog and come and say hello.”
