Fourteen year-old St. John’s student, Lucy Barrett, who lives in Marlborough, is spending August raising money for the British Heart Foundation(BHF) in memory of her grandfather. Lucy, who has always enjoyed running, plans to run three miles a day and is seeking sponsorship. She hopes to run over seventy-five miles and to raise over £500.
Lucy told Marlborough.news, “Three years ago I lost my grandad to heart disease. When I was four years old my grandad was diagnosed with heart failure so we all knew he had limited life. Luckily he proved the statistics wrong and went on to live another ten happy years with his loved ones. We miss him every single day and he will always be with us. I have learnt to remember all the happy memories and to focus on helping others. This year it dawned upon me that I should do something to make my family proud and more importantly my grandad!
I really enjoy running and want to challenge myself for an amazing cause and to help raise money for the BHF to find new cures and treatments.”
Running three miles a day will be challenging for Lucy who has been recuperating from a virus which attacked her nervous system and left her unable to walk properly for two months.
Lucy has discovered that just £24 could pay for two hours of research by an early career scientist. She has set up a Just Giving page.
Lucy says, “Every penny counts, please give what you can to help me get as close to my target as possible – any donations are much appreciated.”
