On Saturday morning next week (4 June) there will be ‘Skillshare’ session, based at the Three Trees Cafe just outside Chiseldon on the A346 where anyone who wants can learn a bit about advanced driving, whether a car driver or biker.
Skillshare is being run by the Wiltshire ‘RoADAR‘ (Wiltshire RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders), who work within RoSPA (Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents) guidelines to give just that bit extra to any drivers who want to hone their skills further.
“We don’t teach or preach” said Bob Fram, chair of the Wiltshire group. “We help, advise, and point out things in your driving or riding to make you safer, cut down fuel consumption (yes, really!) and hopefully enable you to keep the car (or bike) out of the bodyshop or repair workshop”.
“It is also fun.” he added, “It’s not about breaking speed limits but it makes you more confident behind the wheel or on a bike so you can get from A to B, safer, quicker, more relaxed and certainly with more satisfaction. We want to help you”
The RoSPA programme is all about coaching and advising, then testing, with drivers encouraged to attain levels noted as Bronze, Silver or Gold. All drivers have to retest within a three year period so that the skills are kept honed.
So next time you get cut up on one of Marlborough’s many mini roundabouts, or someone pulls out of a junction forcing you to brake sharply, just take a deep breath and think ‘I should have noticed that idiot, earlier’, as a key aspect of advanced driving is about seeing (potential) hazards, well before they happen, and taking avoiding action before someone nearly runs into you or possibly causes an accident.
