The cost of parking in Marlborough will be going up from October 26, Wiltshire Council has announced.
The tariffs review effects the whole county, following what the council called a “comprehensive consultation” earlier this year. Some carparks, stressed the council, will see tariffs frozen for four years – meaning eight years without an increase to the parking charge.
Finding a comprehensive list of the new tariffs, however, proved tricky – Marlborough News Online had to make a special request to get a copy of the full list, which we’ve included in this article.
The headlines are that parking in George Lane go up from 55p to 60p an hour, as will Polly Gardens, Hyde Lane and Hiller’s Yard – which will no longer be a Long Stay car park. You’ll now have to leave after three hours.
The good news is that parking on a Sunday remains free.
A council spokesman said: “Charges are set on a car park by car park basis to reflect local circumstances, rather than the countywide system in place before – this was something local people were keen to see. Many parking permit prices are being reduced all over the county, and the council will be looking into trialling new technology in identified areas.
“More than 5,000 people responded to the car parking consultation, and those responses saw a number of changes to the council’s original proposals. It also saw a 15 minute grace period agreed by council leaders.
“The council is also continuing to work with local town councils and business and community groups to discuss opportunities for locally funded car park schemes to be introduced.”
Philip Whitehead, cabinet member for highways, said: “It was good to see so many people comment on the consultation, and it really did help to shape the proposals we agreed in March.
“Although we wanted to make sure the solution would be cost neutral, we will now actually be putting money in to reduce car parking fees in those car parks that are currently underused.”
