On Wednesday of next week (13 September) u3a in Kennet will be holding their annual Open Day in the ground floor ‘Court Room’ of the Town Hall, where many of the activities that u3a offer to members will be presented for potential new members to see.
The Open Day will be launched – declared ‘open’ by Marlborough Mayor, Nick Fogg at 10:30am – assisted by Town Crier Mike Tupman who will deliver one of his well known ‘shouts’ to make sure that all present will know that the Open Day is open.
u3a in Kennet is already very popular. With well over 650 members from the Marlborough and surrounding area, the group offers those involved ‘lifelong learning and staying active for those who have finished full-time work and raising a family’. Many in the Marlborough area can be described thus, hence the popularity of the movement.
Currently the group offers sixty three ‘interest groups’ to the members around here. These cover a very wide range of activities, from Classic Cars, to Art, Wine Appreciation, Photography, Books, Walking and many, many more.
Details of many, if not all of the sixty three interest groups will be on display at the Open Day for anyone interested to find out about, and maybe even to join the group.
What is u3a? As well as being a national movement which encourages lifelong learing, as noted above, its members come together to develop their learning, social and creative interests in a friendly and informal environment. It’s a ‘self-managing interest group’ where members can decide what each group (in different areas) does. Examples of three groups that will be present on Wednesday are below:
