‘Every cloud has a silver lining’, and in this case the ‘cloud’ is the unplanned closure of Marlborough College due to the Coronavirus crisis, and the ‘silver lining’ is the donation of their surplus food to Marlborough charities supporting the vulnerable and elderly, which took place earlier this morning, Friday 20 March.
The College regularly serves 3,500 meals per day, catering for pupils and staff, which meant a surplus of items including fresh fruit, salad, vegetables, bread, eggs and milk following their unexpected and unplanned move to an online learning environment earlier this week.
These items were donated with visits to the Jubilee Centre and the Orders of St John Care Trust Day Centre, which will support the vulnerable and elderly.
Food was also delivered to Sue Brady Catering, where items will be used in food parcels to support local families with children on free school meals and key workers.
Simon Lerwill, Foundation Director at Marlborough College, commented: “Marlborough College is very keen to do what it can to help in these difficult times. With the move to becoming a virtual school we couldn’t let food we had planned to use next week go to waste and on the advice of the Town Council, we were delighted to pass it over to these three very worthy groups.”
