“Our season is now over” stated Marlborough Rugby Club Chairman Gary Sharp when announcing measures to be taken following the recent directives from the Rugby Football Union and advice from Government. All remaining matches are cancelled and all events planned for the next few months either cancelled or postponed.
The Rugby Football Union has cancelled all community rugby until 14 April which, in effect, wipes out the rest of the season. In addition to the club matches the following have been removed from the calendar:
- Mini/Junior awards (was 5th April) postponed
- Junior to tour to Essex. Cancelled
- Quiz night postponed until next season (TBA)
- Race Night postponed to 9th October
- Ladies Lunch postponed to next season
- Summer Ball postponed – maybe to be rescheduled for September
All external events and activities in the clubhouse such as Pilates and Yoga sessions organised by those hiring the space have also had to be cancelled/postponed.
Gary Sharp, the rugby club’s Chairman, commented: “Our season is now over and we have had to postpone a number of social events organised to raise money to develop the club. These plans included additional changing facilities to accommodate a third XV team next season, a Ladies XV the following season plus the creation of more playing areas for our Minis and Juniors.
However, our number one priority is to the health and well-being of our players, supporters and wider society and postponement was therefore a straightforward decision. We would like to thank all those that were already supporting these events and hope that they will be able to participate when we have re-arranged dates.
