The mystery behind the appearance of chalked drawings of bikes on Marlborough High Street has been resolved: Extinction Rebellion (XR) Devizes and Marlborough have been busy chalking symbols of bicycles on to Marlborough’s High Street in several places to highlight the need to make the streets safer for cyclists & pedestrians and help ensure a green recovery from the current Coronavirus crisis.
XR activist and organiser Jo Ripley explained that “these visual messages reflect the growing awareness of the need to tackle the scourge of pollution and toxic air of recent years.
“London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has just announced one of the biggest car-free initiatives of any city in the world. There are some amazing examples globally being put in place to restrict car use that might otherwise explode as people stay off public transport.because of the problem of maintaining safe social distancing. There’s the recognition that we have to respond to this health crisis in a way that reduces the impacts of the climate crisis.”
She added: “Cities across the world have announced measures that will enable a safer road environment for cyclists and pedestrians and the emphasis on a low-carbon recovery from the coronavirus. We can all do our bit to help”
