It may be distinctly chilly and Spring may seem well beyond the end of the winter tunnel, but it is helpful to bees to plant bee friendly bulbs – now and lots of them.
And that is exactly what a number of community groups did last weekend (October 21-22). As part of the environmental improvement programme devised by the Bee Roadzz campaign – which is led by the Marlborough Downs Space for Nature (MDSN) and Transition Marlborough – 6,000 bulbs were planted across the area.
They will grow into Spring flowers that attract bees…and are, of course, great for us all to look at.
Bees are not having a good time just now, and they are vital – one third of our food production relies on pollination by bees.
Thirteen community groups got down to the planting – from Avebury (their Community Orchard Group), to Mildenhall, and to the community pub at Winterbourne Bassett.
On the MDSN Facebook page you can see one very satisfied person who is thankful for the continued wellbeing of bees. She puts a super crop of walnuts down to healthy bees.
