The winterbourne along Lottage Road also rose and water spread further towards the village – threatening properties along Lottage Road. Some drivers were particularly unhelpful on that stretch, causing waves that made the problem worse.
The water subsided during the late evening. On Saturday morning levels were more or less back to where they were during the week.
People in Aldbourne were out in strength on Friday evening directing traffic and helping to protect homes.
As one resident told Marlborough News Online: “They were doing all the good things you’d expect. The Aldbourne Youth Council were brilliant at the Community Junction building which was threatened with flooding from West Street.”
“Friday afternoon and evening added further misery for those already affected by flooding, and especially those whose homes were directly affected when the waters rose. But without such a concerted community effort, and the assistance from the Marlborough fire crew, it could have been much, much worse.”
“Among those directly affected, it’s the flooding from groundwater rising inside houses that remains the major problem.”
It will not be clear for several more hours whether the weekend’s rain on the surrounding downs will bring even more flood waters down into the village and raise the level of the water table further still.
