Local illustrator Chantal Bourgonje and her husband, the author and TV script-writer, David Hoskins are celebrating the publication of their new children’s picture book, ‘Edie’s Little White Lie’.
The picture book, aimed at children aged 4 to 7 years old, is the third in the Horace and Nim series and is published by Hubble and Hattie Kids. The series is based on a collection of different woodland animals. The first in the series, ‘The Lucky Lucky Leaf’ was published in 2018 and ’Positive thinking for Piglets’ was published last year. However, the books can be be read as stand-alone books.
‘Edie’s Little White Lie’ celebrates friendship and honesty. Edie means well but sometimes good intentions can backfire. Kay has to conquer her fears and not worry about being laughed at. She has to learn that sometimes it’s worth taking a risk in life.
David told marlborough.news, “I try to write stories that children will enjoy but which will also get them to ask questions. The stories don’t shy away from life’s ironies and complications. The books are humorous and tongue in cheek and will I hope be entertaining for adults.”
Horace and Nim started life as cartoons aimed at adults, their gentle humour intended to rekindle childhood memories. Chantal published them on a blog and this started a worldwide following.
Chantal said, “I love animals and animal stories allow you to draw a wide variety of characters and express a lot of different emotions without upsetting anybody.”
Many of the inspirations for her drawings come from walking in the Savernake Forest with her dogs.
‘Edie’s Little White Lie’ is available at bookshops, including the White Horse Bookshop and Amazon.
