Former Wiltshire Chief Constable Pat Geenty is to leave the force on Sunday (June 28) – despite a potential case hanging over him for misconduct. He handed over to the new Chief Constable, Mike Veale, on June 1.
A report by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) into how Mr Geenty dealt with two complaints, which concerned the way two earlier complaints had been dealt with. The original complaints were about the handling by the Force of allegations of sexual abuse.
The IPCC report – which runs to 140 pages – and their supporting material will now be considered by the Wiltshire and Swindon Police and Crime Commissioner, Angus Macpherson.
Responding to the IPCC’s statement, Mr Macpherson said: “It is not my intention to prevent Mr Geenty from retiring. There is no legal ground to do so, nor do I believe it is in the public interest to suspend him.”
“The finding by the IPCC is of potential misconduct, not gross misconduct. He has reaffirmed that he will respond to any issues that arise if it is considered that there is a case to answer.”
