The Wiltshire medical committee of the British Medical Association (BMA) is backing moves to introduce charges for each visit to a GP.
Under the plan patients would be charged a flat fee of ‘up to £25’. The fee is seen as a way to stop people missing appointments and a way to fund doctors’ surgeries.
The Wiltshire doctors are reported as stating that the idea that healthcare should be free at the point of delivery is no longer viable. That has been one of the key principles of the NHS since its foundation.
The plan will be discussed and voted on at the BMA’s annual local medical committee conference later this month in York.
