The scheme to replace the Clarke and Rodway garage at the foot of Granham Hill with 27 retirement flats has been voted down by the town council’s planning committee.
The meeting on Monday (September 22) heard from the developer, McCarthy and Stone, that in their experience the number of parking spaces would be sufficient. This did not appease councillors’ worries.
Councillors also objected to the provisions for increased road safety measures. They were alarmed at the lack of a promised pedestrian crossing which it seems Wiltshire Council vetoed.
The development, which has been addressed in several letters to Marlborough News Online, will probably be ‘called in’ by a Wiltshire councillor and then go before a full session of the East Wiltshire planning committee.
