For Her Majesty’s special birthday this year, Marlborough Town Council is already working with St Mary’s Church to hold a Civic Service on Sunday, June 12 to celebrate the Queen’s birthday with the community – to which voluntary groups, schools and residents will all be invited.
There may well be lots of other celebrations being organised by neighbourhoods around the town and we’d like to know more about them and to hear if anyone needs help in getting things started.
In the past there have been many memorable community occasions in Marlborough and in recent years, the Town Council, often working with voluntary groups, have put on the Christmas Lights Switch-On, a Civil War Re-enactment, a Homecoming Parade for 4MI Battalion, Remembrance Parades, a Royal Visit to commemorate the First World War and even a special Alice in Wonderland event in Priory Gardens masterminded by the current Town Mayor, Councillor Margaret Rose.
The town council are asking people to let them know what people have in mind – perhaps a ‘regal picnic’ in Priory Gardens with bunting and charity stalls, small neighbourhood street parties, children’s sports activities, commemorative items for children or something longer lasting to remember this special year.
The magnificent Jubilee Clock standing outside the Jubilee Centre is a lasting example of how Marlborough has reacted to such events in the past.
Town Councillors are keen to hear from people what they think may work for town or neighbourhood – something traditional or something completely fresh. They say: “Just let us know how you and your neighbourhood would like to be involved and we will do our best to help.”
Anyone interested is invited to come along to a meeting at Marlborough Town Hall on Wednesday, 13 April at 7pm.
