Many in the Marlborough and surrounding area have gained an insight into music, particularly contemporary music through the advice and tuition of Stuart and his tutors at Slater Music School.
Below is a letter from Stu Slater giving the sad news that the School is closing, explaining the pressures behind his decision to close, and giving his thanks and appreciation for all those who have helped him over the years and also to the Marlborough Community many of whom will have been introduced to and inspired into playing and creating music by Stu and his team.
To all learners and parents, past and present.
After 19 years, I am very sad to announce that Slater Music School has ceased trading.
The reality is Covid hit us hard, the post-lockdown re-emergence has been difficult, and I cannot continue personally financing the school indefinitely and in the current climate. Therefore, I have taken this very tough decision to close.
The staff here are all informed, we will be providing references, and I hope all the teachers continue in music and music education. My thanks go to tutors Sean Carter, Ben Dumpleton, Sarina Parsons, Joe Knights, Ted Keen and of course Lindsey—an ever-present behind the scenes; also, SMS’s previous tutors, Matt Clements, Paul Mortimer-Jones, Lewis Bickham, Charlie Galley, Sean Ivens and previous administrators Hannah Guarneri and Lisa Feeney. A real community team over the years.
Sean, Ben and Sarina need a particular mention, with me for 10, 8 and 6 years at the school respectively: gifted musicians, educators and fine people.
I hope all students have enjoyed their time with us; we have certainly had our achievements:
- Many hundreds of children, young adults and adults given access to music over many years across many instruments.
- Hundreds of exam successes from beginner to Grade 8.
- Many learners becoming advanced players and performers.
- Alumni include learners who have gone on to complete music degrees and a record label.
- Invitations to provide, and successful delivery of, Marlborough College Summer Programmes
I could go on…
More than this just music, irrespective of age and ability, I have always sought to feed into the wider outcomes of:
- Confidence
- Self-belief
- Identity
- Peer respect
- Transferable skills into other areas of learning and life
I am a little crestfallen, but head is held high, and it is important to close the school with my sincere THANK YOU to the Marlborough Community, for your trust and custom over the many years.
Best wishes,
Stu
