In the last financial year NHS Wiltshire (the Primary care Trust – PCT) saved the two million pounds it was required to save by the government. But during the year it also paid off £9,426,000 of its inherited debts.
When formed in 2006 as one PCT covering all Wiltshire, it had to take on debts of £63 million which the previous three PCTs had incurred. It has been paying these off ever since.
The PCT will cease to exist in March 2013 and a member of its successor, the GP-led Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has made it clear that the GPs are most grateful to be inheriting such a robust financial situation.
Wiltshire CCG will take on operational running of the county’s NHS from next Monday (October 1.)
