The General Synod’s eventual decision to approve legislation that will allow women to become bishops has been welcomed as “a relief” by Marlborough’s Rector, the Rev Canon Andrew Studdert-Kennedy.
“At last we can get on with what should never have been delayed and hopefully we can begin to put behind us these years in which senior women clergy have not been treated on an equal basis with men,” he told Marlborough News Online.
“The vocation to be a Bishop is a very particular and demanding one, requiring an unusual combination of gifts and skills together with a humility that recognises a person’s dependency upon God’s grace rather than their own abilities.” And he added: “It is exciting that there appear to be a number of women priests who could fulfil this role and whom God is calling to do so.”
