The Merchant’s House in Marlborough’s High Street has a free exhibition about King Charles I,II and III and Oliver Cromwell in its upstairs oak panelled room. The exhibition is open from 10am -2pm and runs from May 3-12 with the exception of the Coronation weekend May 6,7,8.
Using artefacts from the museum, the information on display draws on what is known of Thomas Bayly, a silk mercer, who ran his business and brought up his family in the house in the 17th century. Thomas Bayly supported Cromwell and Marlborough was a Roundhead town. He wrote to Cromwell asking for support after the great fire in Marlborough in 1653.
More recently King Charles III and Queen Camilla visited on June 18, 2004 as part of the commemoration of the 800th anniversary of the Town’s charter by King John in 1204. They were given a tour of the Merchant’s House and Prince Charles(as he was then) took particular interest in the conservation of the house.
