On Monday morning (February 10) Claire Perry MP tweeted that she was undecided about the forthcoming free vote on a smoking ban in cars with child passengers. “Heart says ‘ban it’, head says ‘unenforceable bad law’.”
After the debate on the House of Lords amendment to the Children and Families Bill which proposed the ban, Mrs Perry voted against it. She was one of 107 MPs voting against a ban – with 376 in favour.
She then tweeted again: “I totally support the principle but think it will be unenforceable. Education needed.”
However, Downing Street later let it be known that ministers hope to draw up legislation before the general election to put a ban into effect.
