Tony Robinson – of Time Team fame – has a new series on Channel 4: Walking Through History. He will be walking and talking his way through some of Britain’s most historic landscapes – and he is starting at Avebury.
The first programme sees Robinson heading off for a 45-mile walk across Wiltshire to tell the story of life and death in prehistoric times. His route over chalk down lands and Salisbury plain takes him through the greatest concentration of prehistoric sites in Europe.
He starts at Windmill Hill near Avebury – with earthworks dating to 4500BC, it’s one of the most ancient sites in Wiltshire. From there Tony moves on in time and place encountering many of the area’s increasingly complex burial sites and processional routes.
And being the man he is, he will pause for some of the eccentric characters and weird phenomena that have accompanied Wiltshire’s ancient history.
He will retell the fanciful notions of 18th-century antiquarians and he will explain the cutting edge scientific archaeology around Stonehenge, which is finally offering up some astounding answers.
Walking Through History: Channel 4, Saturday (November 23) at 8pm.
