Get on your bike for Lent – that’s the message of the Rt Rev Dr Edward Condry, the 60-year-old Bishop of Ramsbury. He has decided to forsake his car for Lent and to pedal his bicycle and use public transport instead.
“I’m passionate about climate change and through Lent was the perfect time to raise awareness,” he says. “We have become dependent on our cars. We come home from the supermarket and realise we’ve forgotten to pick something up – and so we get into our car and travel a few miles for some bread and milk.”
The Bishop, who travels from his Salisbury office on visits to rural churches in Wiltshire, adds: “You’re not supposed to enjoy Lent but I think I will. What is worrying is the weather. I am hoping there is not a lot of rain or even worse snow. So that’s what I’m praying for.”
