As the apple season comes to an end, Richard Paget of Warren Farm, Savernake, is appealing for apple growers to bring him the last of their current crop – especially cookers. Half of all donated apples will be pressed for free and put into three litre pouches and given to the Food Bank nearest to the donors’ trees.
Richard Paget says: “Our ‘mission’ is to ensure as much local home-grown fruit is used – as opposed to going to waste on the ground. I have contacted the Trussell Trust and they are happy for this juice to be included in the food boxes as it is pasteurised.”
The other half of all the donated apples will be pressed and bottled and sold to people who do not have their own trees. Windfalls are still acceptable: “We will wash and inspect them all before pressing. So far we have made 69 pouches – or 276 bottles worth – from donated apples with more to be pressed.”
The four local Food Banks to benefit are – West Berks (Newbury & Hungerford), Andover, Devizes & Marlborough, Swindon.
Apples can be delivered to: My Apple Juice, Warren Farm, Savernake, Marlborough, Wilts SN8 3BQ.
