Imagine how surprised you would be if you went to add some mince pies to the Devizes and District Foodbank bin in Marlborough’s Waitrose and found some caviar.
Well, it was ‘only’ lumpfish caviar. The only thing sitting at the bottom of the donations bin – which had just been emptied – was this jar of lumpfish caviar.
Some tales get better with age. This jar had a Best Before Date way back in 2016.
So it had to be removed to a safe place to be destroyed – rather in the same way as your luggage would be taken away when left on a railway platform. Any sort of caviar of that vintage could – just perhaps – be dangerous.
Besides all that, it was a gift that did not quite match what the foodbank volunteers had in mind.
