Now that COVID lockdown is being relaxed it is clear that the traffic in Marlborough is back to normal or even more than before. In my view the congestion and pollution is unacceptable. Sitting outside coffee shops in the High Street, which we are now encouraged to do and where parts of the road have been fenced off, exposure to nitric oxides and other poisonous gasses in the atmosphere is a greater danger to our health than catching COVID.
The hazard is obviously increased if we live adjacent to the roads. When the town lost the two railways in the 1960’s with the Beeching cuts, the opportunity to build a bypass was missed, and it there is no chance now. Imagine a road through Savernake Forest!
So what is to be done. Make Marlborough a traffic free zone? That would appeal to Extinction Rebellion.
Are electric vehicles the answer? Apparently there is a lot of particulate pollution from the tyres and brake pads. Cycling and walking. Might save the planet but I cannot imagine the town working that way. Any suggestions? From a concerned resident.
