I have just read the article, and the excellent letter from Bob Holman. I write in response to your request to hear from those affected by Wiltshire Council’s decision to increase the cost of Parking Permits.
I am a resident of Marlborough, living in a pedestrian lane just off the High Street. Since moving here a few years ago I have purchased a permit in order to park my car in George Lane car park.
The massive increase, almost double, will affect me greatly. I am retired and therefore have a limited income. Had the increase been gradual, possibly phased in over time, it would have caused less distress. To suddenly be asked to find such a large amount is a shock, to say the least.
To then read of Wiltshire councillors’ perks for parking as stated in Bob Holman’s letter adds to the injustice of the situation.
Parking for residents of our town has long been a difficult area. Wiltshire Council seem to have ignored all pleas for consideration. As Mr. Holman states, so much for consultation.
LATE FOOTNOTE: the cost of Juliet McGregor’s permit for the year will rise from £349 to £720.
