Sirs, For over forty years there have been various proposals to sort out the problem of the A303 around Stonehenge which is one of the worst road bottlenecks in the UK.
The scheme that has at last been proposed is very expensive but also very imaginative and the landscape around the monument will be transformed for the better. There will not be much of a disturbance to any archeological finds as the tunnel will be deep underground.
The scheme has the support of our elected representatives on Wiltshire Council, English Heritage who run the site and the National Trust.
It also has the support of a prominent local Stonehenge archaeologist who lives in Marlborough : Mike Pitts ( his letter in the Times of November 14th welcomes and celebrates the decision).
Let us hope that this long running saga finishes with the completion of this imaginative scheme.
