Just a line to say how much I agree with Jane Davies’ letter on keeping Marlborough special.
In Preshute, we have been thinking hard about a vision for the future that gets town residents and visitors out and about and enjoying the surrounding countryside that surrounds the town. Our beautiful, unspoiled downlands are on Marlborough’s doorstep and our community’s enjoyment of the countryside has been a rare highlight during the dark days of the Pandemic. Building on that enthusiasm with our neighbouring parishes with projects that also consider our highways, countryside and business development fits perfectly within an overall strategic vision that considers the future as well as the present community’s needs.
Marlborough can be a natural hospitality hub for walking/cycling holidays within the World Heritage area that surrounds us. Such an integrated vision would continue to build on the town’s history as a thriving and working market town and not become a car dependent, grey commuter town. This is an example of the kind of foundation level support we should be providing to promote the town’s businesses and making it more accessible.
And at the heart of any strategic plan must be the objective of making Marlborough convenient, pleasant and easy to use by all. That isn’t on the agenda at present and will require effort by all to change.
