The trouble with a referendum is that the process is very divisive, and in order to try to convince people to support a view, a lot of hot air, fake news, and half truths are put about.

If the original result is overturned, the validity of the process is devalued, because there would be a demand for yet another repeat, and a chaotic situation would arise.
