In your continuing coverage of the changes to the 80 bus service, one aspect has not yet been covered at all. The attention has focused on the disappearance of the early-morning service and its effect on pupils at St John’s. Yet no mention at all appears to have been made of the complete disappearance of the route’s Sunday services.
Its withdrawal leaves Marlborough and its residents without any form of public transport out of the town on a Sunday. That’s bad enough in itself, but the 80 also provided the only means to access the national rail network on Sundays. The withdrawal of Sunday services appeared to be publicised precisely nowhere (marlborough.news, High Street, buses) in the run-up to the timetable change in August. Having been a regular user of the service (and certainly not the only Sunday passenger!) I only discovered the change when I re-checked bus times, having scheduled a family weekend away by train last month. An expensive taxi journey became necessary to bring us back home.
While Marlborough’s public transport is far from perfect, its existence nonetheless supported our move to Marlborough last year and our (thus far successful) decision not to run a car. The withdrawal of Sunday services affects not only our family activities, but also my business activities – and I’m sure makes life equally difficult for other Marlborough residents without access to a private car in reaching destinations such as GWH, Swindon station, family and shopping activities.
I would appreciate anything we can all can do, through marlborough.news or elsewhere, to hold Wiltshire Council and/or Stagecoach to account for disadvantaging Marlborough residents in this way.
