Marlborough’s post boxes have new and very colourful festive hats. There are Christmas trees complete with baubles on London Road, Mister Men in Santa hats in George Lane and a whole group of Victorian mice carol singing outside One Stop shop in the High Street.
Known as ‘yarn bombing’ the craze to decorate postboxes, lamp-posts, fences etc. swept the country in lockdown. The anonymous knitters sneak out in the middle of the night to decorate and the postboxes have been called Banksy postbox toppers!
Despite asking around for information the identity of the mystery knitter(s) is/are still unknown. According to one younger member of the community it’s a ‘gangsta granny’ who sneaks out and decorates the post boxes while everyone is asleep!
Whoever you are, you have given a lot of enjoyment to young and old and to visitors to the town so please let’s have some more. They are beautiful and very creative. We would like to thank you for brightening our day.
