For anyone paging through the Magazine section of yesterday’s ‘Observer’ (Sunday 04 December) you might have come across a piece on ‘Shoppersâ delight: 10 of Britainâs best independent high streets‘.
And, in amongst that select grouping – Marlborough High Street. rubbing shoulders with Ludlow, Stockbridge, Lewes, St Ives and five other small(ish) but very attractive ‘tourist’ towns, the piece describes Marlborough’s Hugh Street thus:
‘A jumble of Tudor buildings, historic merchantsâ houses and Georgian mansions creates a charming backdrop to an array of independent stores and boutiques, scattered along one of the countryâs widest high streets.’
The article identifies The Merchant’s House (as being a shop for ‘elegant Christmas gifts’, Willow & Wolf for ‘designer dresses and accessories’ and suggests that visitors ‘refuel with sinfully good cake and coffee’ at Bunces.
Yes, someone has visited here and they’ve got it right, although there are very many other independent business – shops and coffee shops that could easily have been included.
Guess that they are leaving those for the visitor to explore…..
