SUMMARY:Record Store Day at Sound Knowledge
DESCRIPTION:Sound Knowledge say….. \n\n\n\nIt’s that time of year again! The biggest day in the vinyl calendar is almost upon us. This year’s Record Store Day takes place on Saturday 18th April and we’ll be open from 8am on the day with hundreds of titles from this year’s list\, which you can browse on the RSD UK website: https://www.recordstoreday.co.uk/rsd-list \n\n\n\nWe’ll be running the one-way system with the queue to the BACK door of the shop once again\, accessible from Hyde Lane Car Park or up the steps in Hughenden Yard.Don’t forget to let us know what you’ll be hoping to find on the day. We can’t reserve anything as per the rules\, but it helps us to get our ordering right. Our vinyl floor finders will be on hand on the day to advise and assist with any lists you might bring with you\, but you’re also very welcome to enjoy a browse.  \n\n\n\nStay tuned to our socials where we’ll be giving you a sneak peek at some of the choice pieces over the coming days.

SUMMARY:'Victoria' at the Watermill Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Osborne House 1901. As Victoria faces the final days of her reign\, she clings to her diaries\, the carefully kept record of a life defined by love\, duty and profound loss. Into this certainty comes her younger self\, forcing the older Victoria to confront memories she’s chosen to bury and truths she’s decided to forget. \n\n\n\nVictoria and Albert are celebrated as one of history’s great love stories. Victoria had nine children with Albert\, and after his premature death at 42\, she spent the rest of her life mourning her ‘dearest angel’. At least that is the story told in her diaries. But does writing something make it true? Looking back at a young queen\, this new play tells the story of a woman pregnant for most of her 20s and 30s\, gradually surrendering her strength and authority to her controlling husband\, and growing increasingly lonely in her crumbling marriage.

SUMMARY:Marlborough Rugby on The Common - 2nd XV (Nomads) v Salisbury
DESCRIPTION:Click here for details – Kick Off time etc. \n\n\n\nParking: \n\n\n\nThe Common is used by many different clubs and groups\, who regularly need this space to park. This is permitted parking allowed by Marlborough Town Council\, who are the custodians of the Common on behalf of the residents. \n\n\n\nThe varied use can be detrimental to the ground’s ‘health’\, particularly parking during wet conditions which causes rutting. The rutting not only damages the ground but also presents a risk to other users. \n\n\n\nIn order to alleviate the impact of parking and keep the ground at its best\, for the benefit of all interest groups\, matting has been laid to create more resilient parking spaces. In addition\, towards the south-east section of the Common\, a large area has a hard standing sub layer. \n\n\n\nThe diagram below shows the area (marked in orange) that is allocated for parking. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs Marlborough Rugby Club is a major user of the common it is important we strictly adhere to this guidance. \n\n\n\nIf heavy or awkward equipment is required as part of training or a match\, access is allowed to drop the equipment off. The vehicle must then be returned to the orange section of the common. \n\n\n\nPlease note: The carpark at the clubhouse\, on match days is reserved for clubhouse staff\, disabled bays prebooked vehicles\, all other traffic must park The Common. \n\n\n\nWe also advise not to park on Free’s Avenue. There is ample room on the common. It is important to keep Free’s Avenue clear for traffic and not to disrupt the visibility of pedestrians crossing the road. \n\n\n\nPlease do not ignore or drive around the NO PARKING signs and cones. \n\n\n\nThank you in advance for your cooperation.

SUMMARY:The Age of Decadence – Politics & Society with David Du Croz- part of 'History Live' at the Merchant's House
DESCRIPTION:Behind the “pomp and circumstance” of late Victorian and Edwardian Britain there lurked social upheaval\, political turmoil\, industrial unrest and imperial rebellion. To what extent do these “decadent” elements undermine the splendour\, imperial grandeur and apparent strength of the country at this time in its history? Is the lustrous image of this period an illusion? Does this revised interpretation of this period of British history devalue one hundred years of constitutional development devoid of revolution; does it depreciate massive economic and territorial expansion; does it help to explain the drift into global war in 1914? \n\n\n\nThe Merchant’s House is thrilled to present History Live\, a week-long festival celebrating history in all its forms. This inaugural event promises something for everyone: from engaging lectures and a walking tour of Marlborough to visits to Wilton Windmill and Shaw House. \n\n\n\nHistory Live invites visitors to step back in time\, explore local heritage\, and experience history in a dynamic\, interactive way. Organisers hope this marks the start of a landmark annual event for Marlborough. \n\n\n\nIn Partnership with North Wessex Downs Landscape Trust and Wiltshire Historic Buildings Trust \n\n\n\nFor tickets – click here

SUMMARY:The Age of Decadence – Post Impressionism with David Evans - part of 'History Live' at the Merchant's House
DESCRIPTION:For much of the 20th century the art of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods was deeply unfashionable. The swagger portraits of artists such as Sargent and the sexually suggestive visions of the ancient world of Alma-Tadema can be used to argue that this was indeed an ‘age of decadence’\, to borrow the title of a recent book on the period by Simon Heffer. Yet perhaps this view ignores too much of the artistic output of the period to command acceptance. The art of the Newlyn School or the Camden Town Group and even a more complete survey of Sargent’s work suggest that the British art of the period cannot simply be dismissed as ‘decadent.’  \n\n\n\nThe Merchant’s House is thrilled to present History Live\, a week-long festival celebrating history in all its forms. SUMMARY:Sir Frank Whittle - Jet Pioneer - talk at the Kennet Valley Hall
DESCRIPTION:Click here for tickets \n\n\n\nor call box office – 0333 666 3366 \n\n\n\n Crofton Beam Engines in conjunction with the Kennet Valley Hall is very pleased to have the opportunity invite you to an evening talk to hear about the pioneering engineer Sir Frank Whittle\, inventor of the modern jet engine. We all take it for granted that flying in jet aircraft for a holiday is quite normal and give little thought to the engineering talent that\, despite everything that the government of the time could do to hold back progress\, lead to the invention of the modern jet engine and a revolution in air travel.  \n\n\n\nOn Wednesday 22nd April at 7.30pm aviation documentary producer Nicholas Jones will be talking about Sir Frank Whittle and the development of the jet engine. The talk will be illustrated by many film segments interviewing Sir Frank and shots of the engineering in development and flight. We are very fortunate to have Nicholas presenting this talk the seeds of which go back to an original documentary project in 1997. Nicholas commented that in 2004 listeners to local radio stations in the BBC West region voted Whittle their choice in a ‘local hero’ competition. Nicholas was then based between Chippenham and Malmesbury and got wind of this contest. It became the catalyst for him to make a new documentary\, which lies at the heart of a talk Nicholas is giving on

SUMMARY:The Age of Decadence – Arts and Crafts with Christopher Rogers - part of 'History Live' at the Merchant's House
DESCRIPTION:The late 19th century saw Great Britain at its zenith. The British Empire spanned the world as did our commercial and financial interests. Fortunes were made\, ranging from beef production in South America to the tea estates of Assam. New money needed to be displayed and showing off with a new house\, the more opulent the better\, was a symbol of success. It might well be described as an ‘Age of Decadence’ where taste was subservient to display. However\, is that a fair assessment? The influence of William Morris\, the Arts and Crafts Movement and the legacy of Edwin Lutyens and Detmar Blow might suggest otherwise. We will explore these different trends in the dying years of this ‘Age of Decadence’\, brought to a cataclysmic end by the First World War.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Merchant’s House is thrilled to present History Live\, a week-long festival celebrating history in all its forms.
