The Arts Society Kennet & Swindon `TASKS’ – September 2023 Meeting – The Lecture: ‘The Flowering of the British Renaissance’

THE LECTURE THE FLOWEREING OF THE BRITISH RENAISSANCE given by LESLIE PRIMO. We know a lot about the Italian Renaissance, but far less about a similar renaissance that took place in both art and architecture in the late 16^th and early 17^th centuries in Great Britain. The lecture will look especially at the tensions that developed between the native British artists and those, who for many reasons, not  least political, found a new home in Britain and were quickly taken up by the rich and cultivated cognoscenti, and not least the English Court. Marcus Gheeraerts and Isaac Oliver came from the Netherlands, while Nicholas Hilliard, miniaturist, was home grown.
