DISPELLING AND PRESERVING THE MOORS IN SPAIN. This lecture will explore how, after the ‘Reconquista’ of Spain, which had begun long before 1492, Christians continued to build in a Moorish style, known as the ‘Mudejar’. The lecture begins in Toledo in 1085 with buildings which show the fusion of Muslim, Christian and Jewish styles. The lecture ends in Granada at the Alhambra, perhaps the best-known evidence of the Muslim era. It will examine how the Christians took back Spain from the Moors, destroying 800 years of cultural heritage, although some of that cultural heritage has remained and has been rightly much admired.
THE LECTURER: JACQUELINE COCKBURN is the managing director of an art tours company which specializes in running courses in Andalucía, southern Spain. She is a course director and lecturer for a wide variety of cultural organizations including the Royal Academy and Christie’s Education. Obviously her specialist field is Spanish Art, but she does lecture on a wide range of topics relating to European Art in general.
