The-Arts-Society-Kennet-and-Swindon-TASKS

15 May 2023 @ 10:30 am

The May   2023 meeting of TASKS will be on Monday 15th May  2023 at the Ellendune Centre, Wroughton.  Coffee will, as usual, be available from 10.00 am.  If  you wish to attend as a welcome guest, please notify the Secretary, Rosalie Winter, in advance. Her contact details are: telephone 01672 520261 or email rosalie.winter@outlook.com.

This lecture tells the story of Ukraine through the shared culture which binds its proud people together. We will explore the sacred art and architecture of Kyiv, the heartland of medieval Russia. We explore the relationship with Byzantium and then with the Eastern Orthodox church. In addition to the emergence of Kyiv, we shall explore other distinctive regional cultures in this large country. Ukraine’s  complicated multi-ethnic history also means looking at its rich folk culture traditions. These range from native song to the secret codes embedded in ancient embroidery, which have exerted a  surprising impact on modern painting and contemporary haute couture

THE LECTURER: ROSAMUND BARTLETT.

Rosamund is a writer, lecturer and translator whose work as a cultural historian ranges across the arts.  She completed her doctorate at Oxford and is the author of several books, including biographies of Chekhov and Tolstoy. She is currently writing a history of the Russian avant-garde.  Her new translation of Anna Karenina for Oxford World’s Classics was published in 2014 to great acclaim.

For many of us, her study day lectures on Russia for Wessex Area at Market Lavington last year will be remembered with much approval.
