The Lecture: Bruegel: the Seasons of the World by Gavin Plumley
In 1565 Peter Bruegel (the Elder) was commissioned to create a series of paintings for a dining room in Antwerp. These paintings charted the course of a year, or the progress of the seasons and they changed the way we view the world through art. Landscape had hitherto been simply a decorative backdrop to portraits, religious paintings and even profane subjects from classical mythology. In Bruegel’s hand, landscape, and the way we interact with it, became the focus of the painting, irrespective of the actual subject matter portrayed. This lecture explores how Bruegel pioneered a new way of observing and thinking about the environment and our own place within that cosmos.
